SAP PI/PO vs. SAP Integration Suite: Comparison for Decision-Makers

Functional and operational comparison of both integration platforms: architecture, operating effort, licensing, and migration impact — condensed for decision papers.

What the Decision Is Really About

SAP Process Integration and Process Orchestration are heading towards a defined end of maintenance. Therefore, the question is rarely *if* the integration platform will change, but in what order, with which operating model, and with what degree of reuse.

Architecture

The classic middleware is a self-operated Java landscape with its own patch, certificate, and capacity management. SAP Integration Suite is a cloud service: runtime, updates, and scaling are handled by the provider, while your responsibility shifts to flow design, governance, and monitoring.

Operational Effort

  • **PI/PO:** System maintenance, kernel and Java patch levels, housekeeping, sizing — plannable, but resource-intensive.
  • **Integration Suite:** No platform operations; instead, ongoing monitoring of quotas, connectivity (Cloud Connector), and vendor release updates.

License and Cost Impact

The transition shifts costs from infrastructure and internal operations to consumption- or capacity-based models. Crucial for the business case: the migration itself is the largest single cost item, not the target operations.

Migration Impact

A solid business case requires three metrics: the number of interfaces actively used in production, the proportion of technically transferable mappings, and test coverage. Without this assessment, any estimate is a gamble.

Recommendation

Start with a four- to six-week assessment and one pilot flow per integration pattern. The result delivers the required effort, sequence, and operating model in a format that reliably supports an investment decision.

Next step

Let's work out how this applies to your own SAP landscape and delivery plan.
